Energy Upgrade for Athenian Brewery with WEISHAUPT solutions

Athenian Brewery is fully aligned with the Heineken Group’s sustainability strategy and has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

The need

To meet its environmental targets and reduce reliance on fossil fuels and their volatile costs, an energy upgrade of the boiler house at the Patras production facility was identified as a critical priority.
The existing heavy fuel oil burner of Boiler #2 was associated with high fuel consumption, increased emissions, elevated operating costs, intensive maintenance requirements, and limited compliance with modern environmental standards.

The solution

The Energy Team of KALAMARAKIS AUTOMATION undertook the complete upgrade of the combustion system, delivering a turnkey solution from engineering and design to installation and final commissioning.
As part of the project, a new Weishaupt WKmonoGL80/3‑A burner was installed, with a thermal capacity of 18,000 kW. The burner supports dual‑fuel operation (natural gas/LPG and Light Oil #2) and incorporates Low NOx technology, enabling a substantial reduction in emissions.
The system is equipped with W‑FM200 electronic combustion control, featuring a multilingual display and full BMS integration capabilities (Modbus, Profibus), ensuring advanced monitoring and operational flexibility.
Maintenance requirements were significantly reduced thanks to the burner’s ergonomic design. In parallel, a new automation electrical control panel was engineered and installed, ensuring full system control and enhanced operational safety.

“We are extremely satisfied with our collaboration. KALAMARAKIS AUTOMATION is a reliable partner we can trust for our next steps as well.”

Benefits

While the full impact of the upgrade will be realized over time, initial results are already highly impressive:

Over 32% reduction in emissions, supporting ESG objectives
2.2% improvement in energy consumption efficiency
3% increase in boiler thermal efficiency

The system now operates with greater stability and reliability, reduced maintenance needs, and less downtime. Fuel flexibility allows for improved adaptation to market conditions, while real‑time monitoring through the control interface enables more accurate and efficient operation.
